iPads on sale at high prices outside the US

With limited availability even in the US, the only country where it has been released so far, the iPad is fetching high prices in other countries.  Oddly, this seems to includes even countries where the device is scheduled to be released within the current month, such as the United Kingdom.   In a quick search on the Web I found a store offering the 16 GB WiFi model for 578 Pounds which is more than 50% over the rumored prices for the device when it is officially released in the UK, later this month.

In Brazil, where there is no announced date for availability, the same model is going  for over $1200, on average, at an auction site.  On this site I was able to find a large number of offers with a wide range of prices ($1000 to $1600) for a device that costs $499 in the US, if you can find it.  It seems that Apple’s inventory of iPads is running low in some locations in the US, as a friend currently on vacation in Las Vegas could not buy one.  He visited two Apple Stores where he was informed that there were none in stock and that they had no information about when they would receive more units.
