The iPad is already roaming 3G networks around the World

Less than 3 days after the initial release of the iPad 3G it is already roaming 3G networks around the World, despite not having gone on sales anywhere but in the US.  This morning one of iPad Watcher’s readers from Brazil sent me a link to a news article (in Portuguese) about a user that has already applied the scissors to his 3G SIM card and has gotten his iPad connected to the 3G network of Vivo, one of the four largest mobile carriers in the country.

According to the user he had no trouble using AT&T’s SIM card as a template to cut the excess plastic from his Vivo SIM card and once the operation was complete he could connect to the carrier’s network without issue.  In fact in his first day of usage he reports that the connection seems even more stable than when using his iPhone.

It was inevitable that the 3G version of the iPad would spread at least as fast as the Wi-Fi model released almost a month earlier, but the fact that the device is not locked-in to AT&T’s network should be a big incentive for everyone traveling to the US to consider buying one the devices as Apple still has not announced dates for availability abroad.

A list of about nine countries is expected to have their iPad launches within the month of May, but that still leaves out over 180 countries where there are many people eager to get their hands on an iPad. Now those that live in regions that are served by 3G mobile networks can be assured that they will be able to get the maximum out of their devices, if they get them when traveling to the US or from the gray market which is growing rapidly around the globe.
